If you want to understand a new language, listen to it spoken by a fellow countryman or woman.

Yes, this research out of Israel has shown that we understand speakers of a foreign language better if they have the same non-native accent as we do. That is great to know. Just stay away from native speakers and you should be all right.

  1. I may be doing more harm than good, but I’ve always ‘put on’ a bit of an accent when talking to people who aren’t native English speakers. My family & friends always notice and comment, usually along the lines of "You sound like an idiot, what the hell are you doing?". At least now I have proof.
