I spent two and half days at a CLIL conference in Eichstaett Germany. I am still collecting my thoughts and will comment over the next little while. Lots of enthusiasm amongst the delegates, from many European countries. All the proceedings were in English. The concept is that languages are best learned from meaningful content, and regular courses in school and university can be taught in a foreign language (mostly English) and in this way both content and a language are learned. There was much talk about CLIL teaching techniques but I couldn’t see how they differed from normal teaching techniques, some of which are effective, and some of which just keep the class occupied. Certainly the principle of learning languages from meaningful, authentic and challenging content is one that I agree with.
