Grammar is like a plant.

Grammar understanding is like a plant. It can only grow properly in the right kind of soil with enough nourishment. The soil and nourishment come first, and that means lots of listening and reading and vocabulary growth. With enough input and vocabulary, the grammar plant just needs a little help now and again. Without these, you can prop up the plant, but it will die.
